In a bold move, the Government of India has announced a Rs 10,000 crore ($1.2 billion) initiative to catapult the country to the forefront of artificial intelligence by 2030. Dubbed the IndiaAI Mission, this ambitious plan has seven key pillars – computing infrastructure, foundation model development, data ecosystems, AI applications, skill development, startup funding, and international partnerships – designed to accelerate India's AI growth.

The mission's focal point is a shared GPU computing cluster, boasting over 10,000 high-end AI chips, which will be made available to startups, researchers, and academic institutions at subsidized rates. This strategic move directly addresses the biggest hurdle in India's AI development journey – access to cutting-edge computing resources.

The Union IT Minister's statement emphasizes India's potential to become an AI superpower, driven by its talent, data, and now, political will. The government is determined to not only adopt AI but also build the next generation of foundation models, trained on Indian languages. This move will enable India to develop AI solutions tailored to its unique needs and create a significant market for AI products.

The IndiaAI Mission is poised to unleash a new era of AI innovation in India, empowering startups, researchers, and institutions to drive progress and compete globally. With its robust framework and significant investment, this mission has the potential to transform India's AI landscape and make it a major player in the global AI ecosystem.
